Venue changed for McCain's Fairfax rally; mixed reasons given
John McCain's visit to Fairfax has been moved from Fairfax High School to Van Dycke Park in Fairfax City. The rally is still scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 10. Doors open at 8 a.m.
“Due to the overwhelming response for tickets, we have had to move the McCain-Palin campaign rally to Van Dycke Park to accommodate the crowd size, which has doubled our expectations since we started handing out tickets,” said Gail Gitcho, a spokeswoman from the campaign. “The field house at Fairfax High School could no longer hold the number of people we were expecting.”
However Fairfax County School Board member Kaye Kory (Mason District) said the move was due to an outpouring of complaints against hosting a campaign rally during school hours.
“Having a campaign there while school was in session is against our policy,” said Kory, who said she opposed having the rally at the school. “The board never agreed to have it. The superintendent [Jack Dale] is the one who agreed to have it.”
Kory said the McCain camp was given notice this morning that they could either host the event after hours or move it off campus.
“I must have gotten 100 e-mails ... from people who felt it was inappropriate to host a campaign rally during school hours,” Kory said.
McCain campaign officials said Van Dycke Park will allow everyone who wants to attend the chance to see the Republican candidates.
Voters still can obtain tickets by going to the McCain Virginia Web site at Virginia.JohnMcCain.com or by visiting one of the Virginia Victory offices today until 9 p.m. Tickets also will be available at Van Dycke Park off of Old Lee Highway starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Voters who already have obtained their tickets will be admitted to the rally at Van Dycke Park and do not need new tickets. Shuttles will be available at Fair City Mall/Turnpike Shopping Center at the intersection of Main Street and Pickett. Shuttles will begin running at 7:45 a.m. EDT to the event site.
In Loudoun, tickets are available at McCain's Loudoun Regional Victory Headquarters, 46950 Community Plaza, Unit 201A, in Sterling.
