Game of the Week: Bulldogs aim for Liberty title

With their eighth consecutive playoff appearance already secured, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs still have plenty to play for in their regular-season finale.

The Bulldogs (9-0) will host W.T. Woodson (7-2) on Halloween night in Ashburn with the Liberty District title at stake.

“They are playing well,” Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson said of Woodson, which is 6-0 in district play. “It's a good thing for us to have a game here at the end of the season that is going to have some meaning.”

The Fairfax-based Cavaliers have won three straight games since a 41-6 loss Oct. 3 to Division 6 power Westfield. Woodson has won by double digits in five of its six district games.

Stone Bridge enters the Liberty clash fresh off a 70-7 victory against Thomas Jefferson. The Bulldogs totaled 432 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground as they set a school record for points in a game.

“Every play seemed like it went for a touchdown,” Thompson said. “I just thought we executed very well.”

The Bulldogs, who will begin defense of their 2007 Virginia Division 5 championship Nov. 7, are aiming for their sixth consecutive district title, fourth straight in the Liberty District.

Stone Bridge's last district loss was in 2002 against Park View when it was a member of the Dulles District.

“We always talk about playing for championships,” Thompson said. “This will be our first chance [this season] to play for a championship. This gives us something to point to and get excited about.”

Note:
Stone Bridge quarterback Patrick Thompson will miss Friday's game with a high ankle sprain, while his twin brother Zach Thompson, a DL/TE, is expected to return this week from a knee injury.
