Volleyball: Bulldogs ace Liberty District

The Stone Bridge Bulldogs completed an impressive turnaround to their 2008 regular season with a 12-25, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24 and 15-12 victory against Langley Oct. 23 in McLean.

The Bulldogs (7-0 in the Liberty District, 11-9 overall) clinched the district championship after handing the host Saxons their first district loss of the season.

Stone Bridge has strung together eight consecutive victories following a 3-9 start to the season. The Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Liberty tournament and an automatic berth into the Northern Region tourney as regular-season champs.

Senior Lily Vera, whose return to the lineup after a finger injury has sparked the Bulldogs' rise, dished out 46 assists and scooped up 17 digs in Thursday's victory. Sarah Norton slammed 19 kills, while Christine Beckham added 18 kills to go with 21 digs.

Amanda Miller and Lindsay Gill combined for 49 digs, and Alexis Chism contributed five blocks and two kills. The Bulldogs will host the Liberty District tournament, which begins Oct. 27.
