Obama speaks to thousands in Leesburg
“If we can win Virginia, we can win this general election,” said Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during a rally held in Leesburg Oct. 22.The event drew a crowd of more than 10,000, event organizers said.
“I've met folks in Martinsville and up here in Leesburg that are worried about their schools, worried about their homes,” Obama said. “Change never comes without a fight.
“Now more than ever we need to concentrate on the problems facing America.”
Event attendees began lining up for admittance to the event as early as 10 a.m. The rally began at 5:30 p.m.
“Seeing him in person makes it very real,” said David Jarvis of Fairfax, who faced heavy traffic to get back home after the rally. “However long it takes, it's worth it.”
Western Loudoun resident Robert Reining said, “We're totally enthused about Obama. He's so good that it's scary.
“He's decided to do the best for the most people rather than the wealthy and privileged.”
Preceding Obama's address, came former Gov. Mark Warner (D) – who is running for U.S. Senate – and Gov. Tim Kaine (D).
“There are 13 days until we turn this country around,” said Warner. “At this moment in our country's history, we need to come together.”
Kaine warned rally goers that an Obama win in Virginia was not a sealed deal.
“It's looking good now, but we haven't done this in a long time,” said Kaine, referring to Virginia's long history of being a red state. “We have to remember that we're the underdog.”
Obama and Republican presidential candidate John McCain face off in their final showdown, Nov. 4 – Election Day.

Is Loudoun part of the real Virginia or the fake Virginia? Maybe Palin will tell me.

What no "spread the wealth" in his speech? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Obama will not take Virginia in the general election. I know I am crazy for going against the media and the polls but hey I'm just a “racist” Republican.

According to Mr. Obama, we are ALL Virginia. There is no "real" and "fake". Its just VIRGINIA. Just like there are no regions of America which are more "pro" than others, or more Americans who are more "real Americans" than others. Mr. Obama is right, we are ALL Americans, and we ALL love our country, whether we are liberal, conservative, or independent. I wish the Republicans would stop the bad-mouthing and actually talk ISSUES, and I don't mean regurgitating that fake Joe the plumber guy, who isn't even a plumber and doesn't believe in paying taxes and says social security is a joke. McCain needs to leave him behind and talk about the REAL problems in this country.

Johnarlington - like you I am not sure if this is real or fake Virginia. Even if Palin can't tell us "for sure, you betcha" she may be able to give us directions to the closest Neiman Marcus in either real or fake Virginia.

To Waya -no one is questioning if you are an American. Conservatives are speaking about issues. Obama has a character issue (Resko, Ayers, Wright, his very own words in his book: he picked his college friends carefully, the "Marxist professors"). Regarding Joe The Plumber. You have it wrong, it's not specifically about Joe BUT what Obama said...."spread the wealth." A vote for Obama IS a vote for Socialism. Go check out the definition in Wikipedia, you'll be surprised.
Off to the Palin rally on Monday!!!

Regarding the post from Waya. You have it all wrong. It's not about Joe The Plumber. It's about what Obama said, "spread the wealth." A vote for Obama IS a vote for Socialism. Go check it out in Wikipedia, you should be VERY scared. Conservatives are a little disappointed in President Bush, but we have not been attacked in 7-1/2 years. Sen. Biden guarantees something bad will happen. Biden is always so serious and has access to intelligence reports the same as Pres Bush. What is he saying? Remember, THE number one job of the President is to protect our great country.

Hey VA_DR - I followed your advice and read up on socialism. Funny, I couldn't find anything in all of those definitions about expecting EVERYONE to pay taxes being socialist. What you just don't seem to get is that the problem is that those Bush/McCain tax breaks and loopholes are allowing an "elite" portion of society to pay no taxes. I pay my taxes and don't appreciate it that the folks who keep Neiman Marcus in business pay no taxes.

The increasing number of physical attacks on McCain/Palin supporters and/or their property (as reported by even the mainstream media) leaves non-worshipers wary of the Talibama. When even Joe Biden warns against dissent from the unquestioning worship of "The One", those who aren't drinking the KoolAid have good reason to worry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3GjPN...

BabyBoomer: According to Wikipedida --- Socialism: "advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods." Please read about who is paying the federal taxes. Approx 86% of taxes are paid by Top 25%. The Top 1% pay 39% of taxes which is down from 2% in 2000. A smaller portion of society is paying the freight. The facts are the facts. A vote for Obama is a vote for Socialism. Just be prepared to accept the results. Every little change is a loss of our Freedom. Remember, the central tenet of Constitution is to "limit" the power of Government. Let's get away from class warfare and reduce the size of goverment. The more you send them, the more they spend. Freedom, Freedom, Freedom.

Dear VA_DR. . look up the definition of "fascism": suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism."
Joe McCain says northern VA is commie country. Palin talks about "real" Americans, Michelle Bachman calls for cleansing congress of leftist liberals, McCain says DC and NY City are nothing but elitists, accuses a US Senator of terrorism. If you don't agree with them, you are the ENEMY, you are an anti-American, leftist slimeball. If you aren't white, Christian, and 100% Republican, you are not a "real" American. That's what I hear out of Republican mouths these days. Northern VA isn't "real" because we have lots of immigrants and non-English speakers? (even if they are citizens).
Palin said "God will do what's right on election day!". What if I'm Muslim, or Buddist, or Atheist. . . or (heaven forbid) Gay? Will God not count my vote? Plus McCain won't spout off about Rev. Wright, because Rev. Wright is a Disney tale compared to Sarah Palin's whacko church, and bringing up Wright opens the door for Obama to discuss Palin's religion. Never gonna happen. Sorry, I would prefer SANE people running my government, thank you very much.

You've got all the answers, too bad you just don't know the questions...
Obama's tax plan calls for the reversal of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 5% of Americans. The other 95% either get additional tax cuts or their rates stay the same. Did you know that McCain in 2000 voted against those Bush tax cuts calling them "irresponsible?" Did you know that? Does that make McCain a socialist too? That's the problem with all the name calling and such by you guys. You don't bother to do your homework and there's frankly just no substance to your arguments.

Loudouner1, I do know the facts and I have asked the questions. How can 95% of taxpayers get a cut when 40% of people do not pay federal tax. It means they will be getting a check. Simple. Socialism. Redistribution of wealth. Obama say it. Whenever the government taxes anything you get less of it. So if you tax income you get less of it. The little guy is the one who will ultimately get hit. Businesses still need to turn a profit so if there is less of it they will hire less people.

Waya, You keep going down the class-warfare road. Why? I'm keeping to the facts and have not personally attacked you. Obama wants to redistribute wealth. Yes, I want to purge leftists from "government" because the left wants to redistribute wealth and penalize income earners. Who's to say that the $250 number won't be $100 next year. I want my kids to have unlimited ability to work and earn as much money as "they" decide. They more we turn over our personal decisions to people who sit in a windowless room the more we lose our freedom. If that's what you believe in, fine. But I will continue to fight for less government.

Waya,
When Palin says "God will do the right thing on election day", she is only saying she trusts that, no matter whom is elected, it will be the right thing, even if we don't understand it at that time. She did not say "God will see to it that McCain wins".
Last time I checked, Muslims believe in God. Isn't that what "Allah" (from your previous post) means? And I do think there are a few gays who believe in God, some of which serve in the clergy. Have you been told that God is anti gay? Or anti anyone? Or counts votes?
Put the glass of Kool-Aid down. Step away from the glass of Kool-Aid.
As for Ms. Palin's clothes, CNN's Campbell Brown, who even other journalists think is in the tank for Obama, has come to Palin's defense on that one, so you need to get over it. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/2...
Her clothes, like Obama's $1,500 suits, are campaign props. She doesn't own them and won't keep them.
BTW, I checked--there are no Needless Markups in AK.
And, as far as VP candidates go, if Obama wanted a weak running mate (not Hillary), he got more than he bargained for with Biden. Is he a Republican plant? No one could actually be that much of a dolt. Imagine if Palin had made a quarter of the blunders he has! Yikes!!!

The "wealthy" pay no taxes? Just another laughable liberal myth. VA_DR has the facts correct, directly from the IRS. Of course, there are direct income taxes and indirect income taxes. When you raise the taxes on small business owners (or large corporations), who do you think those taxes are passed along to? The answer is the consumer, no matter the tax bracket.
Even JFK knew that by lowering taxes (the last D to do that?) he would be able to collect more tax dollars as the economy expands. And you don't raise taxes in a recession. On anybody! Period!

After retreading the same old argument, you still didn't address my point. If Obama simply wants to reverse the Bush tax cuts for those making over 250K, the same tax cuts McCain called "IRRESPONSIBLE" and voted against, does that also make McCain a so-called socialist?
I'm obviously not going to change your mind on this election, but I do want to point out the absurdity of your name-calling.

We all know the trickle down economics theory by now. There's no need for any more lectures. After 8 years of trickle down economics contributing to the economic melt down we are currently facing, isn't it time for a different direction? Is that too much to ask? Looking at the current polls, suggests it's not too much to ask.

But aren't Bush and McCain the same person??? McCain's issue was from a balanced budget perspective. The Bush tax cut involved an across-the-board tax cut for everyone. Obama's proposal purportedly will target only high wage earners (aka class warfare) and, by Obama's own admission, is meant to "spread the wealth around". In fact, he's even suggesting we increase payments to those already receiving federal assistance and calling that a "tax cut"! Or has he flipped on that one, too? Kind of sounds like "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need". Wonderful in theory...
This county is about equality of opportunity, not equality of results. The U.S. already has a progressive tax structure. If his policies require more revenue, raise everyone's taxes. But don't raise anyone's during a recession. Or, better yet, lower the cost of the federal government!

What do the polls have to do with the validity of a position? I believe you and many of the Obama supporters are operating on understandably negative emotions with the economy in the crapper, a very unpopular war and a very unpopular president, not to mention that Obama just seems so nice and reasonable. Given the above, the real story to this election cycle is that Obama isn’t up by 30+ points in the polls. Makes me hopeful that some independents are actually looking before they leap. In ref to your statement re economics, I need to introduce facts into the discussion again (sorry). The current mortgage/liquidity crisis had its genesis with the Community Reinvestment Act in the late 70s (Carter), later strengthened in the early 90’s by Clinton. The Clinton changes essentially created the sub-prime debacle that we’re now dealing with by coercing banks to make bad loans. Bush tried to address the issue in his first term, but was thwarted, essentially along party lines (Ds against stronger regulation, Rs for. How about that?). At the time, Barney Frank, whose “lover” was a high-ranking executive within Fannie Mae (Gosh, they don’t mention that on CNN, do they? I wonder if that would be the case if Mr. Frank was Republican?), essentially said “Crisis? What crisis? There’s no crisis!” Prior to the Carter/Clinton fuse igniting the current melt down, Bush’s “trickle-down” economics had produced low unemployment, low inflation, high productivity and strong economic growth. IMO, yes, the change you’re pining for is way too much to ask.

Loudouner1, Whether or nor McCain called the tax irresponsible is not relevant to the discussion. It has nothing to do with Socialism. Obama clearly stated he wants to spread the wealth around and he has not backed down from that statement. Obama is going to cut checks to people who don’t pay taxes in the first place. Government taking over our lives, Socialism.

Loundouner1, Trickle down economics, also known as Supply Side Economics, does work. More capital flowing through the market means more jobs and income for everyone. It’s out-of-control spending that gets us in trouble. Also, if it didn’t work, why is Congress calling for another “stimulus” package??? Which by the way isn’t a true stimulus package, but that would require a more detailed explanation.

Proof I'm in la-la land?!? It's so typical of a wild-eyed liberal to cut and run when the facts interfere with their world view. I went ahead and did the research for you. You'll be happy to know I've used the NY Times from Sept. 11, 2003 as my source, although the story was the same in a wide variety of newspapers.

Here are some quotes so you can prepare yourself:
"The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago."
''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
