CountrySide and Cascades
Time Travelers, a new restaurant, swim teams, a Night Out and the quilters
By Kathie Felix
Time Travelers: Ed Levine, the force behind the alternative Cascades message board and a Leesburg Airport open-house team member, reports that tickets are available for a Leesburg-based flight into history in celebration of the Leesburg Airport open house on Aug. 30. The mission, if you choose to accept it, involves a flight in a restored B-17G Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast,” the type of American bomber that helped win World War II. Although the airport’s open house is only a single day, flights will be scheduled on both Aug. 30 and Aug. 31. The cost of the flight is $359 for members of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and $399 for non-members (the cost includes a free one-year EAA membership). You can book your flight online at http://secure.eaa.org/B17/securejoin_B17.html.
Sterling Velocity: The Velocity Five Sports Restaurant and Bar at the intersection of Gallows Road and Lee Highway in Falls Church opens a second location at the end of August, on Algonkian Parkway in the Great Falls Plaza spot held until recently by the Fox Chase Tavern. The updated nightspot will include a 2,000-square-foot outdoor patio area with a covered bar and flat-screen televisions. The Falls Church location includes 8,000 square feet of space and 50 large flat-screen televisions hooked up to high-definition satellite television. What do you think the Sterling TV count will be?
Rapids Report: The Cascades Rapids swim team finished the season undefeated in its division. In the final dual meet of the season, the Rapids swam past the Barrington Bluefins with a score of 291-153.
Waves Watch: The CountrySide Waves swim team continued their winning streak with a 283-161 win over the Arlington Knights of Columbus Holy Mackerels. The Waves, the only undefeated team in their division, remain at the top of the leader board with a 100-point lead for first place.
Night Out: The area’s National Night Out event takes place Aug. 5, 7-10 p.m., at Potomac Falls High School. The National Night Out, billed as “America’s Night Against Crime” and sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, was created to heighten crime and drug prevention and awareness, and to generate support and participation for local crime-prevention programs.
Cascades Night Out: Cascades residents participating in the National Night Out event can pick up a large Cascades tote bag (a recyclable grocery tote) at the Cascades Community Association office.
Sit’n’Sew: The CountrySide Quilters hold a business meeting and sit’n’sew on Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Lutheran Church in Cascades. Bring a nonperishable food donation for the church’s LINK pantry. Call 703-450-2139.
