All-Stars compete, goat visit, council meeting

By Betty Shiflett

All Stars: Haven't heard the results yet, but Ginna Theerman with her Upper Loudoun Liberty All Stars 14U fast-pitch team was in the top bracket and going into the regionals. They were to have headed to Wilson, N.C., Monday for opening ceremonies and a picnic. Stay tuned.

Goats old, goat lively: Well, I reported before about some old goats in the village -- Corky and me, Donald Beach, Clarence Spinks -- but we recently had a lively weekend with a four-legged goat whose owners were on vacation.

We got inquiries from neighbors as it was wandering through yards. I thought I remembered Elizabeth and Bob Pickett having a goat, but alas, no answer to the telephone. Elizabeth was with Ginna at the softball tournaments. We walked down and were told that they didn't have a goat.

Somebody found out that he belonged westward off of the W&OD trail. Sandy Hackney gave a detailed chronology of its activities. She said she'd never laughed so much in her life. He didn't like to be alone -- he stood on the sidewalk in front of the house while they were outside, but when they went in, the goat would come on the porch, stand on its hind legs and look in the window. Tommy had to chase him off the picnic table a number of times.

Sandy got the idea to get him into an enclosed area. Neighbor Bert Swope agreed to get "Billy" into their yard. It followed Sandy in, and she, Tommy and Ronnie Hackney surrounded him and tied him to a tree. The caretaker while the family was on vacation came and retrieved him. Sandy said if you ever need a good laugh, get a goat.

Council meeting: Remember the Paeonian Springs Council meeting tomorrow night. We'll be starting to plan for the fall festival.

Birthday greetings Friday to Michael Leigh. We wish you many more.

Thought for the Day: "Why is it at class reunions that you feel younger than everyone else looks?"
