Voter registration, top LVHS scholars, a community's loss, Old Stone School fundraiser, DMV hours jam session, dinner theater, Family Night Movies, rummage saleBy Sue Ulland
Voter registration: The presidential campaign is heating up and it is time to think about voting in the Nov. 4 election. If you are not already registered in Loudoun County, the deadline to register to vote in this election is Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Extended hours for absentee voting begin Oct.20. Saturday absentee voting takes place Oct. 20 and Nov. 1. Mark your calendars now so your vote will count.
Additionally, the Loudoun County Electoral Board is seeking election officers. This is a compensated position. If you are interested, e-mail elections@loudoun.gov or call 703-777-0548 to find out where to register near you.
Kudos to LVHS: The Jay Matthews Challenge Index has ranked Loudoun Valley High School as number 159 among the country’s 1,300 best high schools. That ranking is up from 259 last year and 534 in 2003. Way to go LVHS teachers and students.
Sympathy: Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the Virts family and friends on the loss of Donald Virts Sr. who died at home at the age of 67 July 12, after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Virts, a farmer, was a lifelong Loudoun resident who graduated from Loudoun County High School in 1958. A graveside service and interment were July 15 at the Hillsboro Cemetery.
Old Stone School Fund: Those wishing to donate online via Paypal account or by check to the restoration of the OSS following the recent fire can do so on the HCA web site www.hillsborova.org. Restoration work is well under way.
DMV adds hours: Good news. The Department of Motor Vehicles in Purcellville is expanding its hours of operation. Located in the Virginia Regional Transit Office off Hirst Road, the center handles vehicle registrations and titling as well as emission testing and state inspections weekdays. The branch does not offer driver license testing or issuance. The new hours will be 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays.
Bluegrass, folk jam: The monthly bluegrass and folk jam session at the Round Hill Arts Center takes place Friday, July 25. Doors open at 6 p.m. Due to fire regulations, the “pickin” will take place outside in the back parking lot and on the front porch. Beverages and food will be served inside.
Parking is available across the street in the church parking lot.
Aurora Studio Theatre: Aurora Studio Theatre at Grandale Farm Restaurant is proud to present “The Art of Dining,” a delightful comedy of dinner manners directed by Ike Stoneberger. Written by award-winning playwright Tina Howe, the play contains mature themes and language and is not recommended for children. The comedy will be presented Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Aug. 1–17. Fridays and Saturdays, dinner is at 6 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m.; Sunday dinner is at 1 p.m. and the show is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $65 and are available now by calling 540-668-6000. The cost includes tax and gratuity, but not alcohol. Aurora’s first dinner theater production sold out two weeks in advance, so it is recommended that tickets be purchased early.
Family Night Movies: Fireman’s Field in Purcellville will be the venue for Family Movie Night Friday, Aug. 15. “Ratatouille” will be shown. This is a family-oriented, free event. Bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the show.
The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital continues to seek donations for its 70th annual rummage sale scheduled for Oct. 17-18 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days) at the Morven Park Equestrian Center just north of Leesburg off U.S. 15 north. All proceeds benefit the hospital. To donate, call 703-771-2985 and leave a message. A member will return your call and set up a convenient time and place to meet. Help The Ladies Board celebrate 70 years of giving to the community by donating your usable items to its rummage sale. Something new has been added this year. For the usual sale hours no admission will be charged, but those opting for ticketed early admission (i.e. 8-9 a.m.) will be charged a $5 fee.
Birthdays: Happy birthday wishes this week go out to Madeline Murphy, Taylor Lineberry, Katherine Allen, Robert Wilson, Jeff Beamer, Taina Hernandez, Sarah Pierce, Annette Seidel, Jonathan Anders-Lauten and Brian Harris. Enjoy your special days.
Those wishing to submit birthday announcements should do so at least two weeks in advance by either e-mail BUlland123@aol.com or call 540-668-6331.
