Bluemont

Emergency volunteers, HSCBA fundraiser, fair poster, center update, Patsy Kline and celebrations

By Ruth Holland

I’m back. Hopefully I can get my schedule back in order. I have been missing deadlines for some time now.

Fire, rescue volunteers: This spring the Clarke County Rotary had a guest speaker from the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Many of the members hadn’t known just what being a volunteer firefighter entailed. The long hours of training, raising money, long hours away from their families, holding down full-time jobs are just a few of the things they heard about. I have known a few firefighters and rescue people for years so I knew how much time was involved. I have always considered them our real Home Town Heroes.

Because of this speaker, the rotary donated its proceeds from the joint (Horse Shoe Curve Benevolent Association and the Rotary) dinner dance held on May 31 to the Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

HSCBA fund raiser: The HSCBA held its 16th annual fundraiser for Blue Ridge on June 21. In spite of the increasing cost of gas and food there was a good turnout. A check was scheduled to be presented to Blue Ridge on Monday, July 21. Won’t say how much now because it keeps changing every other day.

Poster chosen: Finally, the Bluemont Fair had decided on the poster and T-shirts. This is the first time I can remember that the selection of artwork came down to the printer. The voting was that close. Posters will go up after the Lucketts Fair in August.

Center transfer: It still not known when the Bluemont Community Center will be transferring its activities to Round Hill. When they do, the planning and hopefully renovations will begin. As much as we love the old building, it still needs a lot of major repairs and upgrading.

'Always Patsy': If you like live theater you have got to go The Wayside Theatre in Middletown. The current production is “Always Pasty Cline.” A group of us went to opening night and were stunned with the performance. The actress Sara K. Story sang about 14 of Pasty Cline’s songs. Well worth the drive.
