Sterling Park needs an HOA

Is Sterling Park a "cesspool," as Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) called it during an interview on WAMU 88.5 last month? In a phrase, of course not.

But it is a community in need of some tender-loving care, which is why we think property owners in Sterling Park, who have the most invested in the community, should create a homeowners association.

Given the proper amount of legal authority and staffing, such a body would be better equipped to address the host of issues plaguing Loudoun's first suburban community than a financially strapped Loudoun government can. (Some parts of Sterling Park are in an HOA, but the vast majority of the community is not.)

If offending residents do not cut their grass or move their cars off their lawns, an HOA could threaten eviction, fine them or simply pester them with notices reminding them that their help is needed to keep the community pristine and neat and home values up.

Yes, such a proposal would be greeted by moans from the residents who say they moved to Sterling Park to avoid the watchful eye of a HOA. Also, there is the matter of how does a community go about creating one. Through much research and community involvement, the details could be worked out.

Take the responsibility of cleaning up Sterling Park out of the hands of county officials and place it in the clutches of those who have the most to gain and the most to lose: Sterling Park residents.

Come out to the fair

While not news to most folks who reside west of Leesburg, residents who live in Loudoun’s suburban communities in Sterling, Ashburn and South Riding may not be aware that Loudoun has a proud agriculture heritage. And the upcoming Loudoun County Fair, which runs from July 28 to Aug. 2 at the county fairgrounds west of Leesburg, is a celebration of those in Loudoun who live off the land.

Some of the events on tap include a cattle weigh-in, a sheep-handling demonstration, a swine exhibit and a llama show. Outside of farming, the fair will also feature a carnival, a demolition derby, the crowning of a pageant queen, and plenty of food and music.

Summer is time for fun in the sun with your family. And we think one of the best ways to enjoy yourself in the great outdoors, while not burning too much gas, is at your county fair.

LTM… who the hell is “Staff”? And, does he/she/them reside in Sterling Park? I am SICK AND TIRED of the LTM “TELLING-THE-COMMUNITY OF STERLING PARK HOW THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO LIVE. You people are THE-MOST-CONDSCENDING-PEOPLE in (and I use the word loosely) professional journalism. You sit up-there in Leesburg and think you’ve possess all-the-answers. Did you ever ask yourselves how Sterling Park has been around since the mid-1960’s and has NEVER needed a HOA before now? The only reason Sterling Park is in decline is the BLATANT DISREGARD for the laws of our country. Get some people on the Loudoun Board of Supervisors that have the courage to ENFORCE-THE-LAW in Sterling and the rest of the county and we will not need the LTM to bestow your bits of wisdom on us.

I agree with PHenry here, but as well if any of these bloody fools would listen to the frikken WAMU 88.5 radio again with Delgaudio they would have clearly found out that he did not call it a cesspool. I am getting so sick of people misquoting him, I have the tape from WAMU radio downloaded and I have listened to it at least 5 times and he does not call Sterling a cesspool. All he says is that it will turn into a cesspool if the illegal immigrants and gangs continue!!!

We are in no need for an HOA if the county would just get some force in here and get rid of the people that make Sterling into an ugly place (i.e. the illegal immigrants and the gangs)! Until that happens nothing will get better and an HOA won't help either especially since the immigrants and gangs don't care about the law.
