WSPN president retires, Whippen assumes role

Nuttall, one of the original founders of the company, had held the positions of president and chief executive officer since the company’s start in 1992.

Rich Whippen, formerly the vice president of sales for WSPN, assumed the positions of president and CEO of the company.

Whippen previously worked for Gatehouse Media in suburban Needham, Mass., where he held the position of director of advertising for national and major accounts, and Herald Media in Boston, where he was advertising manager of major accounts.

"Rich Whippen is a multimedia executive who brings the experience necessary to take our advertising network to the next level,” said Peter Arundel, president of Times Community Newspapers, co-owner of Washington Suburban Press Network. “We're fortunate to have his steady hand at the helm."

During Nuttall's 16-year tenure, the Reston-based company grew into one of the largest suburban community newspaper networks in the country, with more than 90 local community newspapers with distribution into more than 1.6 million suburban Washington, D.C., households.
