Eastern Loudoun starts baseball tourney with win

Eastern Loudoun defeated Williamsburg 2-1 in the first round of the Virginia Babe Ruth 14U tournament July 17 at Park View High School.

Eastern Loudoun pitcher Garrett Thomas surrendered just one earned run and recorded 10 strikeouts on 85 pitches for the complete-game victory.

“He was phenomenal. The best game I’ve seen from him thus far,” Eastern Loudoun head coach Kyle Jessop said.

In addition to his powerful pitching, Thomas also performed at the plate. His sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning notched a run for Eastern Loudoun, who added their second run of the game later in the inning on an RBI double by left fielder Blake Duncan.

Williamsburg managed their only run of the game in the top of the fifth when center fielder Brink Ambler hit a two-out RBI triple.

Thomas was able to close the door on Williamsburg in the seventh -- striking out two of the three batters he faced to secure the victory for Eastern Loudoun.

The two teams played each other last summer with Eastern Loudoun also winning that game.

“We beat an even better Williamsburg team this year,” Jessop said.

Eastern Loudoun plays Dinwiddie July 18 at 1 p.m. at Park View in the second round of the double-elimination tournament.
