CountrySide/Cascades

Goodbye and hello, cameras, Waves Watch, Rapids Report, books, gardens and a beach bash

By Kathie Felix

Goodbye and hello: The CountrySide Proprietary recently said goodbye to Deputy Barrie Dufek, the area’s community policing officer, with an award recognizing his dedication to the community. Deputy Dufek was promoted to another division in the Sheriff’s office. Deputy Roy Ortutay now holds the community policing officer post for CountrySide.

CountrySide cameras: CountrySide is placing security camera systems at each of its pool facilities. The first system was recently installed, featuring several high-resolution cameras mounted indoors and outdoors and remote monitoring capabilities. The system will be used to identify vandals and assist in prosecution efforts.

Waves Watch: Mike Priest, the CountrySide Waves’ public relations director and father of two energetic swimmers, reports that the Waves are at the top of the chart at this point in the swimming season. The Waves earned 900 points after three Gold Division meets, which put them 238 points ahead of their closest rivals, the Arlington Knights of Columbus Holy Mackerels. The Waves are also more than 160 points ahead of the leaders in the other three Colonial Swim League divisions. This week, the Waves meet the Holy Mackerels on July 19 in Arlington.

Rapids Report: The Cascades Rapids swim team meets the Barrington Blue Fins on July 19 in Fairfax Station. Warm-ups begin at 7 a.m.; the meet starts at 8 a.m.

Booked: The Cascades Women’s Book Club is planning a July 21 meeting to discuss “A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian” by Marina Lewycka. New members are welcome. For details, call 703-421-1060.

Gardens Galore: The Garden Group of the CountrySide Women’s Club visits Tudor Place Historic House and Garden in Georgetown on July 23. The house, built by Martha Washington’s granddaughter Martha Custis Peter and her husband, Thomas Peter, is nestled among more than 5 acres of gardens. Carpools are organizing to meet at various locations at 9 a.m. Call 703-404-1083 or 703-430-2048.

Beach Bash: Tickets are on sale for CountrySide’s annual adult’s night out pool party. The 2008 Summer Beach Blast takes place July 26 at the Parkway Pool 5-8 p.m. The festivities include limbo, hula hoop and best beach wear contests, as well as pool races, karaoke, barbecue, frozen margaritas and daiquiris, giveaways and raffle prizes. New to this year’s event is a dunk tank and the opportunity to dunk a Countryside board member. (Those new pool cameras could pick up some interesting images.) Tickets are $10 per resident and $15 per guest (one guest per resident). The tickets will be sold at the Proprietary office until 6 p.m. on July 23.
