Chevy Chase Bank to close Giant Food store branches

The days of banking and food shopping at Giant will end in August when Chevy Chase will close all 54 branch locations.

Chevy Chase Bank has three branches in Giants in Loudoun County, employing about 15 people.

“These employees are being offered reassignments within other Chevy Chase banks,” said Katherine Smith, spokeswoman for Chevy Chase.

According to Chevy Chase Bank's executive vice president for the retail banking division, W. Scott McSween, customers preference leans toward a more private atmosphere when it comes to personal banking.

The bank's 10-year contract with Giant expires in August.

The branches at the Leesburg and Sterling Giants will close Aug. 15, and the branch at the Ashburn Farm Giant will close Oct. 17.

All three locations have Chevy Chase banks in close proximity.

About 240 employees of the bank nationwide will be affected by the closings.

“While our branches inside Giant Food stores are convenient, we are confident that we are able to provide our customers with the banking convenience they want and the personal service they need through our extensive network of traditional neighborhood branches,” McSween said.

The bank has yet to decide the fate of Chevy Chase ATMs in Giant Food stores. Chevy Chase is prepared to continue operating the ATMs, but discussions with Giant are continuing, said Smith.
