Making a difference one penny at a time

More than 290 Washington, D.C.-area schools along with six schools in Loudoun County recently teamed up to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients Program.

The participating schools included Mercer Middle School in Aldie, Eagle Ridge Middle School, Sanders Corner Elementary and Rosa Lee Carter Elementary in Ashburn, and Seneca Ridge Middle School and Dominion High School in Sterling.

All the schools participating raised more than $395,000.

The Pennies for Patients campaign helps to find a cure for cancer and gives hope to patients and their families.

During the program, students learn the science behind blood cancers and spend three weeks collecting spare change and conducting fundraisers for the campaign.
