Hall of Famers to golf for charity

The 18th annual Bobby Mitchell/Toyota Hall of Fame Golf Classic on July 13 will feature all of the 2008 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees.

Darrell Green and Art Monk of the Washington Redskins, along with Fred Dean, Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett and Gary Zimmerman, will join fellow sports legends on the course at Lansdowne Resort.

The event, sponsored by Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association, will benefit the National Capital Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Last year, San Diego Chargers legend Charlie Joiner and his team representing Costco took home the coveted first-place honor with a score of 57 at the Golf Classic.

On July 13, more than 40 pro football and basketball Hall of Famers will meet again on the golf course in hopes of being this year’s champion.

For a $5 donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, local sports enthusiasts can be a part of the gallery and watch Hall of Fame veterans like Oscar Robertson, Sonny Jurgensen and Meadowlark Lemon up close on the golf course from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. With the expansion of Lansdowne’s award-winning courses, the public will have gallery access to a total of eight holes on the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course and the Norman Course.

For an additional donation, spectators will have the chance to win a trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremonies in August and compete in the Hall of Fame Challenge, which includes a football toss, basketball shot and putt. Young fans will have the opportunity to test their golf skills for the chance to win an Apple iPod.

Children 12 and younger will be admitted free to the tournament.

Since the tournament’s inception, the Hall of Famers, along with support from the community, have raised more than $5.5 million. For her strength and positive attitude while battling leukemia, Emily Zimmerman, an 11-year-old from Frederick, Md., is this year’s Patient Hero to be honored by the Hall of Famers.

Hall of Famers scheduled to attend include: Bobby Mitchell, Lem Barney, Bobby Bell, Elvin Bethea, Fred Dean, Joe DeLamielleure, Bill Dudley, Carl Eller, Wayne Embry, Darrell Green, Hal Greer, Marques Haynes, Ted Hendricks, Ken Houston, Sam Huff, Charlie Joiner, Sam Jones, Sonny Jurgensen, Leroy Kelly, Paul Krause, Willie Lanier, Steve Largent, Dante Lavelli, Meadowlark Lemon, Larry Little, Gino Marchetti, Tommy McDonald, Art Monk, Anthony Munoz, Mel Renfro, Oscar Robertson, Bob St. Clair, Charlie Sanders, Billy Shaw, Art Shell, Charley Taylor, Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett, Charley Trippi, Paul Warfield, Roger Wehrli, Dave Wilcox and Gary Zimmerman.
