Blistering the track

NOVA Athletic Club members performed well at the Hershey’s Track and Field Games Virginia Meet June 28 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

NOVA A.C. is a youth track and field team (ages 9-18) with locations in Ashburn and Purcellville.

The outstanding athlete of the day for NOVA was Dane Boegner, who won the 400- and 800-meter races in the boys ages 11-12 division. Boegner is a newcomer to track and field this year and has made remarkable progress during the season.

In the 400, Boegner ran close to the personal best of 1:03.71 that he recorded in the district qualifying race. After only a short period of time for recovery, Boegner led from the start in the 800, winning with a time of 2:32.

There was further excitement for NOVA A.C. in the ages 9-10 400-meter races. Will Smagh finished second (1:11) in the boys' race, and Jennifer Crawford (1:16) was a runner-up in the girls' event. Crawford is another newcomer to track this season.

Charlie Ann Krebs finished third in the 800 race for girls ages 13-14 and Matt Panzica placed second on the boys' side. Earlier in the meet, Panzica finished third in the 1,600, one place behind teammate Andrew Hayden who recorded a personal best of 5:05 in finishing second.

NOVA A.C. also was represented on the track by Alyssa Summers (200 race) and Eileen Fauteux, Moriah Jones, Vanessa Dyce and Gozi Mickles in the ages 13-14 girls' relay.

In the field events, personal bests were recorded by Mikayla Shields, a close second in the standing long jump at 6 feet, 6.75 inches, and Eileen Fauteux, who placed third in the softball throw with a top distance of 131 feet.
