Fourth of July in Middleburg and at Great Meadow, Mary Ann Redmond concert

By Cheryl Kosmann

Fourth of July: Be sure and go to the Middleburg Community Center to celebrate your Fourth of July with friends. The staff has a wonderful, fun day planned for families of all ages and interests. There will be games and activities going on all day long, along with great food for purchase and the pool open to cool yourself off! Fireworks will kick off at dusk.

Great Meadow expects more than 20,000 guests for its 2008 Fourth of July celebration and fireworks. The large family-style event, now in its 20th year, is run for community charitable benefit by the Great Meadow Foundation. The day starts when the gates open at 4 p.m. and goes on until the huge fireworks display ends the evening. Children's activities include a petting farm provided by the Fauquier 4-H Club, a rock climbing wall, face painting, games and pony rides. The Bluemont concert series will provide music on multiple stages from 5 p.m. until just before the fireworks begin. Other activities include model rocket launches, giant-scale radio-controlled planes, a blimp, rescue helicopters and a polo match. Car passes are only $20 in advance and $40 at the gate. Hospitality tents, boxes and rail spaces are also available at price ranging from $185 for a reserved tailgate spot on the fireworks rail to $1,395 for a rail hospitality tent. Early reservations are encouraged because a record crowd is expected. Families without a tailgate spot can bring picnics and blankets. Sponsors for this year's event include Pepsi Cola, Giant Food, NOVEC, Farm Credit, Tri Sept Corporation and WINC. The highlight of the day is the special high-altitude fireworks display, which includes shells larger than any in the Washington region. For more information about the July Fourth celebration at Great Meadow, log onto www.greatmeadow.org, or phone 540-253-5001, or e-mail info@greatmeadow.org.

Mary Ann Redmond: The Bluemont concert series has scheduled Mary Ann Redmond, rhythm and blues artist, for July 12. The concerts are on South Madison Street at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $5, $4 for Bluemont friends and seniors, $2 for children younger than 12. Bring a lawn chair. Refreshments are sold at the concert by local nonprofit groups. Local restaurants are open before the concert or you may bring a picnic. Alcohol and pets are not permitted. In case of bad weather, the concert location is at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church on Sam Fred Road. For more details log onto www.bluemont.org.
