By Kathie Felix

Social Sciences Fair: Dominion High School fielded six winners in the Loudoun County Public Schools' 12th annual Social Sciences Fair in June. Rebecca Smith won first place in the Local History category for a project titled “What Was the Impact of Women Serving in the Army in WWII?” Wendy Hirshman took second place in Citizenship and Government for “Eugenics.” Katherine Holmberg won second place in Opposing Viewpoints for “President Decision Directive 25 & Effects on Rwandan Genocide.” Nathan Hirshman took second place in Philosophies and Faith Traditions for “How Did Socrates, Plato and Aristotle Influence Philosophy and Western Culture?” Steven Ochocki won first place in Cultural Diversity for “Immigrating American.” Michael Stegeman was awarded first place in Family History for “Robert S. Barbee.”

Potomac Falls High School came home with three awards. Kanchana Sthanumurthy took first place in Human Sciences for “The Violence of Separation: Partition of India and Pakistan.” Timothy Tosh won second place in Recreation, Arts and Entertainment for “Baroque Era, Influence on Music.” Kristin Hopper was awarded the Loudoun History Award from the Loudoun County Historical Society for “George Washington, the West and the Making of the Constitution.”

Forum closed: The Cascades Community Association closed its online discussion forum on June 25 around 10 p.m., to look into some security issues brought to light by a Cascades resident. According to Cascades Community Association General Manager Martha Kaczmarskyj, “The Board of directors has temporarily suspended the discussion forums to evaluate security features and process problems and hopes to have the forums available as soon as possible.” A similar message is posted online at the forum’s usual location.

Forum open: The alternative Cascades community forum at www.cascadesva.us is open and hosting a variety of discussions. The site has nearly 300 registered users who had posted a total of 4,325 articles at the time this column was written.

'Oklahoma': Tickets are now on sale for the Sterling Playmakers' production of the award-winning musical Oklahoma. The show runs on weekends July 25-Aug. 10 at Potomac Falls High School. Reserved seats are priced at $15; general admission tickets are $12. Call 703-437-6117.

Holiday breakfast: Delia’s of CountrySide will be open for breakfast July 4, beginning at 8 a.m. This is a special treat; the restaurant usually serves its N.Y. diner-style breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays only.

Locally grown: The Cascades Farmers Market sets up on July 6, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., in the parking lot of the Senior Center at Cascades Marketplace.

Red, white and blue: This Fourth of July, I will be thinking of the courage of many who have crossed oceans to find better lives in a new country. I will also be thinking of the bravery of the countless individuals who continue to ensure that this land remains a beacon of freedom.
