County to launch new commuter shuttle service

More commuters in Ashburn soon will be able to leave their cars at home.

On Sept. 2, Loudoun Transit officials will launch a new shuttle service called LINK that will run between Ashburn Farm and the county's increasingly busy Dulles North Transit Center park and ride lot. Once there, commuters can take buses to Washington, D.C., Arlington County or the West Falls Church Metro station.

"[Dulles North] parking lot is full," said Loudoun's Transit and Commuter Services chief Nancy Gourley. "This, we hope -- since many of our commuters are from Ashburn -- will free up some space there."

This summer, residents have been flocking to local bus stops in record numbers to avoid high gas prices.

Commuter bus ridership in June and July, according to Gourley, was up 31 percent from the same span last year. And if form holds true, she said, the system can expect another 5 to 7 percent bump in ridership after the Labor Day holiday.

In the mornings, the shuttles will run every 15 minutes between 5 and 9 a.m. and in the evenings between 4 and 8 p.m.

They will pick up commuters at two stops along Ashburn Farm Parkway: Parkhurst Plaza and at Junction Plaza next to the Crosswinds United Methodist Church. A third stop will be at Claiborne Parkway and Belgreen Drive.

Some commuter parking will be available at Crosswinds and on designated spaces at Parkhurst Plaza.

The cost will be $1 per one-way trip. Exact change will be required.
