Shamrocks place fifth
The Vienna-based Shamrocks 18U softball team, featuring seven Loudoun County athletes, went 7-2 to place fifth out of a field of 64 in the Amateur Softball Association Gold national championship held Aug. 3-10 in Oklahoma City.
The squad earned a top-five finish in the national tournament for the fifth consecutive year.
The Shamrocks fell 3-0 in their opening game of the double-elimination tournament, dropping them into the loser's side of the bracket. The squad then persevered through temperatures in excess of 100 degrees to reel off seven consecutive victories.
On Aug. 8, recent Dominion High School graduate Dee Dee Fryer singled home Reba Tutt for the walk-off run in an eight-inning 2-1 victory against the Orange County Batbusters, the tournament's previous champions.
Other Shamrock wins during the week came by scores of 11-9, 6-0, 3-1, 4-0, 9-0 and 1-0, before the team fell 6-1 on Aug. 9 to the eventual tournament runners-up, the Corona Angels.
Team captain and Loudoun resident Allie Heon batted .355 for the Shamrocks, while recent Broad Run graduate Karla Powell hit at a team-leading .400 clip. Fellow Spartan Caitlyn Delahaba tossed a pair of shutouts.
Rising seniors Reagan Doiron of Broad Run and Hayley Grabner of Loudoun Valley, and graduated Spartan Michelle Clohan also saw significant playing time for the Shamrocks.
