Notre Dame picks new coach

Uchenna Faumuina-Eze was selected head coach of the girls' basketball program at Notre Dame Academy July 31.

Faumuina-Eze assumes the helm of a Dragon program that has achieved a 57-3 record during the past two seasons and finished last year as the nation's fourth-ranked high school team, according to the ESPN HIGH Elite 25 poll.

The Dragons graduated eight players from last season, seven of whom are now playing Division I basketball.

"We're going to continue with what we've been doing, and that's to work hard, play hard, play together and play smart," Faumuina-Eze said.

Faumuina-Eze, who played at Southern Virginia University of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, most recently coached the girls' junior varsity at Potomac High School in Dumfries.

Notre Dame athletic director Carla Adgate, who selected from a pool of 10 candidates, cited Faumuina-Eze's life experience as a desirable quality in a coach.

"He's been around, seen different things," said Adgate, mentioning Faumuina-Eze's pre-college Air Force career. "His enthusiasm is contagious. We think we have found a perfect fit."

Faumuina-Eze says that it was his "friendly relationships" with Notre Dame boys' coach Jay Williams and departing girls' coach Mike Teasley that attracted him to the Middleburg school.

"It will be very hard to fill his boots," Adgate said of Teasley, who accepted a position with the University of South Florida.

"I've seen some outstanding things, and I want to continue the winning tradition of Notre Dame," Faumuina-Eze said.

Faumuina-Eze spoke of the type of player he wants to coach at his new school.

"I'm not necessarily seeking the best players," he remarked. "I'm looking for players who understand the game, and are committed to being students first."
