Wild Wednesday

Wednesday, May 28 is a day to produce or go home for eight Loudoun varsity teams.

The regional semifinals take place tonight, provided the weather holds up, with eight squads looking to punch their ticket to the state playoffs. Broad Run, in the midst of another fine spring athletic season, has the most teams in action as the Spartan softball, baseball and girls' soccer units will host games in the friendly confines of Ashburn.

The remaining teams are represented by five different schools. Loudoun County softball and Potomac Falls baseball each make a trip to Nokesville to face off versus Brentsville. Stone Bridge boys' soccer is heading to Arlington to meet up with Yorktown, and Park View boys' soccer will take Route 7 West to Winchester for a semifinal showdown versus Handley.

Last, but certainly not least, Loudoun Valley's softball team will make a 250-plus mile trip to South Boston, located just before the North Carolina line, to play Halifax County.

For clarification purposes, two teams from each of the four regions that make up a classification, A, AA or AAA, qualify for the state playoffs. In our case, all the Dulles District teams compete in Region II of Group AA, and Loudoun Valley (Northwest Region) and Stone Bridge (Northern Region) are both AAA schools.

A trip to the region final would secure a state tournament berth for the above schools. The winner of the region championship game hosts a state quarterfinal game, while the loser has to open the state playoffs on the road.

Good luck to all our teams.
